Do you remember this?

The days before ipods, walkmans, cassette decks and tape decks, there was a small vinyl disc, called a 45 record. It looked like this.

When I was a kid, I had a small record player that played 45s only. It was my charm of a gift that my Uncle Lenny gave to me. And it was red! How I loved that record player, and the 45s that I borrowed from my older brother and sister. Actually, in truth, many of them I borrowed when they weren't around. I was born in 1958, the music was ahead of my time. However, I listened to and loved the music that my siblings loved. They were my idols. Even now when I hear the beat of a Motown song, I think of my red record player (it went to heaven) and all the good times I had listening to that great music.

Magie Noire...Magic of the night

I have loved this perfume for more years than I can count. It's soft, slightly powdery vs floral-like. Men and women both love it. I like to think of it as my signature scent, one that I wear time and time again.

Rumor has it Lancome is discontinuing this wonderful item. I must make it a point to purchase a few bottles of it, so I have it for years to come, although I don't know what the shelf life of perfume is.

Do you have a perfume scent that makes you heady with love?

Guess who is turning 50?

My baby brother Ross is turning fifty years young this week. And if he is reading this, I bet he still won't like that I call him my "baby" brother. It's a long standing joke between he and I.

So Ross, join the 50's club. It's not so bad. Let me put it to you this way: it's as good as you make it.
I love you bunches!

I found this quote at a time in my life when I really needed it. It is perfect on many levels.

Cherry Trees and Snow

Artist: Julian Merrow-Smith

Sometimes I think of winter as a quiet time of year. A time to rest one's body and in general: hybernate. This is not to say we should close our shutter windows until April. I still believe the world to be a juicy piece of pie, and should live for a slice of its beauty.

In my life, I'm feeling abit quiet. I'm terribly sad about what is going on in other parts of the world. And that makes me become introspective - grateful for what I have, yet feeling abit guilty for I have at my fingertips.

When I reach out for art/poetry, they seem to touch my inner spirit in ways I can't describe. Some things are not meant to be described through words. So, I hope you enjoy the painting that I selected for this cold wintry weather, and dream of cherry trees for everyone.

Tradition

On Christmas, early afternoon, after presents were opened, pannetone was eaten and hot cocoa or tea was sipped; it was time to make Italian meatballs for the afternoon feast. For all the years my Mother has made them, I have taken them for granted. I have always had a good idea of what they consisted of and how my Mother makes them, but I never sat down with her and actually made them.

So, this was it. My moment of glory or failure. I was to make the meatballs, with my Mother supervising. She is so very sweet; everyone should have a supervisor like her!

So, there I began the first of many meatball making years to come.
Mixing beef, veal and pork, chopped garlic, parsley, Italian style bread crumbs, whole egg(s)salt/pepper, freshly grated parm. cheese - so began the start of it all. Two clean hands are the best utensils to have.

I am adding bread crumbs.

Rolling, rolling, rolling...that was the next step. I loved cooking w/my Mother and taking in the aromas of the day. She reminesced about her childhood days with her Mother, and I soaked it all up.

This is my Mother using kitchen twine to tie up the brascole which is a strip of beef, with added seasonings, and a hard boilded egg in it. It gets rolled, tied, and cooks in the sauce with the rest of the meatballs, and is it every delicious!

I wish I had more picture to show you, but we became so busy, that the camera took the backseat and was forgotten about. We fried the meatballs until browned. Whole peeled tomatoes were then purified in the blender and poured in a large cooking pot.THEN...the simmering began and continued for a couple of hours, until the house was permeated with the hungry scent of sauce. We ate raviolis (fresh from a neighborhood store), soft like pillows and tasted heavenly.

I plan to make the meatballs again so I improve my culinary skills for one of the most foods near and dear to my heart. And of course, that includes my Mother - even more near and dear to my heart.

I feel good!

I was not able to say my "Happy New Year" at the beginning of the year because I was feeling under the weather. A germ made its way inside me, and brought me to my knees. Well, now that it is over, and I have said goodbye to tissues and Vicks menthol, I can promptly move on...

I am not one for making resolutions, however, I always start off on a positive note every New Year. Even though I was sick, I thought of positive things that I want to do within the next twelve months. I intend to live more in the moment, and less in the future. The moment is where I am, and the future is uncertain. So why spend time with uncertainty? I'd rather live where I'm at and bloom where I am planted.

My type of living is doing positive, well-intended, yet challenging things. They are optimistic, and peaceful to the universe.
Peace and love to you in 2010. Happy New Year!
